Christmas Day 2000 Solar Eclipse
(Full size 103KB)
Richard Nugent of Houston took this photo of the partial solar eclipse as seen from Houston.
Richard says: There was continuous overcast skies in Houston.
But I patiently waited for small holes and breaks in the clouds from 10:30 AM to about 1 PM CST.
About 3 holes opened up over a 30 minute period and I started snapping photos.
Here are the specs for the photo: Location: Conroe, Texas Exposure: 1/500 second (no filter) Film: Fuji 400 print film
Telescope: Meade 2045D 4 inch SCT (This scope is a portable workhorse !!).Notice the sunspots right above the Moon's bite.

Venus and Jupiter and Moon
3/4/99

On Feb. 23, 1999, there was a conjunction of Venus and Jupiter in the western sky.
Several members observed this and made a permanent record of the event.
Member Raymond Youm drew
the event (37K) while observing it at 49x with his Starfinder 8 telescope.
You can see three of Jupiter's four moons. And member Leland Dolan shows
the event (35K)
in a combined photo image showing the planetary alignments on the evenings
of February 17 and 18, 1999 Central Standard Time.  This demonstrates how far the Moon moves in a 24 hour period.
These pictures were taken from central Houston with a telephoto lens, mounted on a stationary tripod.  No telescope was involved.

Took this one at the University of South Florida Observatory

Actually, at the time I took this picture, it was considered
a good comet photo. Not today though,
after Hyuakataki and Hale-Bopp!
